LITTLE THEATRE OF MECHANICSBURG SHEDS LIGHT ON THE CRIME OF RAPE
BY PRESENTING WILLIAM MASTROSIMONE’S SEARING DRAMA EXTREMITIES.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a women living somewhere in America is raped every two minutes. This shocking statistic is one of the reasons why Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg will present Extremities by William Mastrosimone March 23 through April 8, 2012.
Mastrosimone wrote the play after meeting a woman who was raped, reported it and later saw her attacker go free. Because of threats by her attacker against her, she was forced to move across the country in order to avoid a repeat attack. Mastrosimone was horrified by her experience and wrote the play to highlight the fate of victims of rape. The play struggled to find an audience for several years before finally being produced at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and eventually becoming a movie starring Farrah Fawcett.
In Extremities, a woman is attacked, but successfully fights off her would-be rapist, holds him captive and due to her fear and shame begins to sink to his level. The play highlights both the physical and psychological wounds that the crime itself and society’s attitude towards it force upon the victim.
To help audiences understand how rape affects its victims, Jennifer Storm, Executive Director of Dauphin County’s Victim/Witness Protection program will moderate a special talkback session following the Sunday, April 1 matinee.
Extremities is directed by Heather Jannetta and features Carolyn Dorff as Marjorie, David Blenderman as Raul, Miranda Baldys as Terry and Susan Wray Danowitz as Patricia. Fight choreography is by Rad Runnin’ Al. Due to its disturbing subject matter and the language and violence inherent in the play, Extremities is recommended for mature adult audiences only.
Extremities will open Friday, March 23 and will continue with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. on March 24, 30, 31 and April 6 and 7. There will also be two Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. on April 1 and 8.
Tickets to Extremities are $16 for opening night, March 23, which includes admittance to the post-show reception and $14 for all subsequent performances. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg box office at (717) 766-0535. Box office opens for LTM Patrons on March 12 and for the general public on March 13.
