Open Invitation to Come Join the Mechanicsburg Area’s Community Concert Band

Also known as the Historic Singer Band of Mechanicsburg, PA, the Mechanicsburg Area Community Band has had a rich past and is looking forward to a promising and vibrant future. The Band is one of the oldest, continuously performing concert bands in the nation, tracing its roots back to before the Civil War. Originally formed as the Keystone Cornet Band, the name was changed to the Seventh Pennsylvania Voluntary Infantry Band when its members joined the service near the outset of the Civil War. After the war, the band was reorganized by David Singer and became known as the Singer Cornet Band.

We are currently preparing our 2012 Spring/Summer concert season. The Historic Singer Band is actively seeking new members in all sections of the Band. We are an all-volunteer community band based in Mechanicsburg made up of musicians from the surrounding areas. Our members come from all walks of life, whose ages range from the 20’s through the 80’s. The repertoire of The Singer Band consists of a variety of styles, including big band standards, marches, show tunes, popular hits, novelty numbers, and classical favorites.

Musicians of all ages who can play band music at the high school-graded level are encouraged to join us. We are always in search of new members in every section of the Band. We practice on Thursday evenings from 7:30 until 9:00. Our concerts, both public and private, take place at various venues on the West and East Shores. There are no auditions; just come and play and have some fun.

The Band is under the direction of Matthew Weisman. Mr. Weisman is Director of Bands at West Perry Middle School and High School in Elliottsburg, PA where he directs the 6th Grade Band, 7th and 8th Grade Band, High School Concert Band, Middle School and High School Jazz Ensembles and the “Mustang” Marching Band.

Check out our website at www.singerband.org or contact either Linda at 717-697-9347 or Jeff at 717-796-1951 or email us at Jeffrey.a.conley@verizon.net. Recapture the joy and fulfillment that you remember from your high school band days; it’s all waiting for you at your Mechanicsburg Area Community Band.

Ongoing Needs: New underwear and socks, both genders and all sizes

Donations may be left in any of the OW bins in the district building. Please label all bags of donations. If you have a large donation, please contact Theresa Day tday@messiah.edu. to make arrangements.

Project Furniture Thanks to Rebecca and Phil Walsh for helping to pick up a truck load of donated furniture items, and thanks to Stephen, Michelle and Zack Hebert for the pick up and delivery of items to a family in our district!

If you have any furniture to donate please contact Maureen Ross at mmross4@comcast.net or Pat Clawges at pclawges@gmail.com

Project Yard Sales ‘N More Since the inception of Project Yard Sale in 2006 we have continued to look for ways to raise money for families in need in our school district. In recent years we have taken some of the ‘better’ yard sale items and sold them on Craigslist, Ebay, and most recently – in local consignment stores.

In 2012 we are looking to expand further into consignment sales with some of the wonderful items donated from the community. We have spoken with owners of the local consignment stores where OW has an account and they invite YOU to bring in items to put on our account. All proceeds from the sale of the items goes directly to Operation Wildcat. (ALL proceeds are turned in to gift cards given out by The Guidance Dept and Nurses to families in need).

This does NOT take the place of donating to our clothing room; we still need those items and the procedure for donating stays the same. This new consignment program is for the home décor items, high end furniture, the ‘dressy’ clothing, the fancy shoes, jewelry, etc.

Here’s how it works: Gather all those items that you don’t really need/want anymore and bring them to one of the consignment stores listed below. The consignment store will log the items under OW account and all proceeds go to OW.

IF you do not hve the time to go to the consignment stores the items can be dropped off at

2425 Clover Drive in a container on the porch.

IF you are not sure if the item(s) are more yard sale then consignment just donate them for the yard sales and we will make the determination where best to sell the item (to make the most money for OW!).

Tax receipts can be given for all items donated either directly at the consignment or dropped off at the above address. (Tax receipts will be given out by OW – not the consignment stores).

Sports Spiritwear Donations The Mechanicsburg Recreation Department is now accepting “gently” used MASD sports apparel program. These items will be made available to students that can’t afford the typical MASH sports hoodie sweatshirts and sweatpants to represent their teams during the season. The Rec Department will also accept monetary donations for a student, and order appropriately. If you have such items, please drop off items at the Recreation Department and they will take care of getting them to the Varsity or MMS coach that the clothing represents.

“It’s 1934 and Oberon and Puck, Shakespeare’s two most famous fairies, magically appear on the set of “A Mid-summer Night’s Dream.” Director Max Reinhardt instantly sees their potential and casts them as themselves. Naturally it’s a great opportunity to put some arrogant “asses” in their place!”

“Extremities” A Drama by William Mastrosimone

EVENINGS: March 30, 31, April, 6, 7, 13, 14, 2012 MATINEES: April 8 and 15, 2012

LITTLE THEATRE OF MECHANICSBURG SHEDS LIGHT ON THE CRIME OF RAPE
BY PRESENTING WILLIAM MASTROSIMONE’S SEARING DRAMA EXTREMITIES.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a women living somewhere in America is raped every two minutes. This shocking statistic is one of the reasons why Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg will present Extremities by William Mastrosimone March 23 through April 8, 2012.

Mastrosimone wrote the play after meeting a woman who was raped, reported it and later saw her attacker go free. Because of threats by her attacker against her, she was forced to move across the country in order to avoid a repeat attack. Mastrosimone was horrified by her experience and wrote the play to highlight the fate of victims of rape. The play struggled to find an audience for several years before finally being produced at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and eventually becoming a movie starring Farrah Fawcett.

In Extremities, a woman is attacked, but successfully fights off her would-be rapist, holds him captive and due to her fear and shame begins to sink to his level. The play highlights both the physical and psychological wounds that the crime itself and society’s attitude towards it force upon the victim.

To help audiences understand how rape affects its victims, Jennifer Storm, Executive Director of Dauphin County’s Victim/Witness Protection program will moderate a special talkback session following the Sunday, April 1 matinee.

Extremities is directed by Heather Jannetta and features Carolyn Dorff as Marjorie, David Blenderman as Raul, Miranda Baldys as Terry and Susan Wray Danowitz as Patricia. Fight choreography is by Rad Runnin’ Al. Due to its disturbing subject matter and the language and violence inherent in the play, Extremities is recommended for mature adult audiences only.

Extremities will open Friday, March 23 and will continue with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. on March 24, 30, 31 and April 6 and 7. There will also be two Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. on April 1 and 8.

Tickets to Extremities are $16 for opening night, March 23, which includes admittance to the post-show reception and $14 for all subsequent performances. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg box office at (717) 766-0535. Box office opens for LTM Patrons on March 12 and for the general public on March 13.

“A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum” Based on the plays of Plautus

EVENINGS: May, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 25, 26, 2012 MATINEES: May 20 and 27, 2012

“Crafty slave, Pseudolus, wants his freedom. His master, Hero, wants the girl next door. But the girl next door is a courtesan. Will the course of true love run smoothly? Will Pseudolus save the day? Will the Soothsayer find his way home, at last? All these questions and more are hilariously answered in the funniest musical ever!”

A BIG BROADWAY MUSICAL, A CHARMING CHILDREN’S PLAY
AND THE CHANCE TO SEE A WORLD PREMIERE IN THE MAKING.

“Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg offers “something for everyone” this spring and summer beginning with the funniest Broadway musical of all times, Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. Join us as slave Pseudolus tries to earn his freedom by helping his master Hero win the girl next door. Of course, Hero doesn’t realize that the girl next door isn’t exactly “the girl next door.” It’s an evening full of hilarity, hijinks and great music. “Tragedy tomorrow. Comedy tonight!”

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum runs May, 11, 12, 17, 18, 29, 25, and 26 at 8 p.m. and May 20 and 27 at 2:30 p.m.

Each summer, we turn our stage over to the kids who always put on a delightful production. This year, join us as the children take center stage to tell us the story of fairies good and bad, changelings, a determined farmer’s wife and a bossy baker in Faery Free For All a comedy b Patrick Rainville Dorn based on two Scottish folk takes. “The Bossy Baker Woman” and “The Changeling.”

Auditions for Faery Free For All are open to all children ages 6 to 18. and will be held at the theatre at 7 p.m. on May 13 and 14. Performances of Faery Free For All are June 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. and June 14 and July 1 at 2:30 p.m.

On July 13 and 14 at 8 p.m., we’ll present a staged reading of a new play. This is your opportunity to see a world premiere BEFORE its premiere, as a talented group of actors perform a work that’s not been seen before. We’re still reading scripts looking for the very best new work we can find. So don’t miss this very special event.”

Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg has been presenting Live Theatre Magic since 1950. It is located in an historic one-room schoolhouse at 915 South York Street in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg is a 501c3 charitable organization and a member of the American Association of Community Theatres.
